Autumn – Mixed Media on Canvas by Luis Mandiola (00035)

Autumn (Otoño) is a mixed-media painting on canvas in which seasonal transformation is represented through accumulation and containment. Three large leaf-like forms—painted in amber, ochre, and luminous white—float against the dark upper background of the canvas like objects suspended in a calm sky. Below, dark bird-like shapes settle and cluster over a warm orange background, whose density contrasts with the pale lightness of the forms above.

The composition is austere in structure but rich in texture: Mandiola builds each zone through overlapping layers of strokes, creating areas of genuine tactile complexity that reward sustained attention. The horizon line between the two registers—the dark sky above and the orange field below—is the axis around which the image revolves. Autumn belongs to a group of works in which Mandiola translates natural cycles into flat, condensed images that carry great emotional weight precisely because they reject narrative elaboration.

Here, sadness and beauty are intertwined in equal measure: the changing of the year captured without sentimentality, through the direct language of painting and the layering of surfaces. A unique work, handmade by the Chilean artist Luis Mandiola Uribe.
