Description
“Apple and Shadow” is a mixed-media painting on canvas in which a single dark object—interpretable as an apple, or a shadow—rests against a pale pink background within a painted decorative frame. The frame is not a mere support but an integral part of the work itself: rendered with dense, interlocking white and dark brushstrokes, it functions simultaneously as a border and a drawing, enclosing the central image in a structure with its own visual weight.
Mandiola’s treatment of the still life is characteristically ambivalent: the central object is identifiable yet unnamed, familiar yet slightly strange. The pink background lends an intimate warmth to the interior composition, which the textured frame intensifies by contrast. This work belongs to a series in which Mandiola revisits the conventions of the painted still life, subjecting everyday objects to a material and compositional pressure that frees them from their anecdotal function.
The result is an image of serene formal strength: domestic in theme, substantial in presence, and fully resolved both as a painting and an object. An original and unique work by Chilean artist Luis Mandiola.
Ideal for:Collectors of contemporary Chilean and Latin American painting.
